DCLS Method

Haloacetic Acids in drinking water by liquid-liquid extraction, Derivatization and Gas Chromatography with Electron Capture Detection

Reference Method

EPA 552.2

Test Description

The sample is adjusted to a pH <0.5 and extracted with methyl-tert-butyl-ether (MtBE). The MtBE layer is transferred is derivatized and neutralized and a portion of the upper layer, containing the HAA methyl esters and is transferred to a GC vial for analysis. The target analytes are identified and concentration determined with a dual column gas chromatograph (GC) equipped with electron capture detectors (ECDs). Analyte identifications are confirmed using a second dissimilar column with a complimentary stationary phase.

Sample Collection

Samples are collected in duplicate in 60 ml amber glass vials with PTFE lined screw caps.

Storage Guidelines

The samples are stored in a refrigerator in the analytical lab area where they are kept between 0 to 6ÂșC until analysis.
