Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services

The Drugs of Abuse (DAU) testing section at DCLS provides secure, reliable, and cost-effective drug testing to state agencies with the goal of promoting health and public safety. The drug testing section performs laboratory testing for different drugs in urine specimens that are submitted for monitoring for illegal or improper drug use. The laboratory employs qualified subject matter experts to provide assistance to our customers with respect to explaining test methods, interpreting test results, and providing expert testimony in courts of law. Our laboratorians also provide consultation and training to our customers to ensure sample collection and chain-of-custody procedures are properly followed when samples are collected and submitted to DCLS for testing.

The screening of urine for different drugs and metabolites at DCLS is performed using an Enzyme Multiplied Immunoassay Technique (EMIT), which screens for the presence of the different drug targets. If detected, the sample is further tested by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) to provide a higher level of confirmation of the specific drug detected. DCLS also performs testing to assure that other compounds and chemicals do not cross react with our methods and produce false positive test results. Additionally, testing is performed to assess whether the urine samples submitted to the laboratory have been altered or diluted in order to give a negative drug testing result.
