DRUGS OF ABUSE IN URINE (DAU) CONFIRMATION
Laboratory: Drug Testing
Test Description: Drugs and related compounds are extracted from previously screened urine samples and analyzed by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) or gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS).
Order Approval Required? Approval from the Department of Corrections (DOC) is required prior to submitting test request.
Specimen Type: Urine
Collection Container: Collected in Plastic (Polypropylene, polycarbonate, polyethylene) Leak-Proof Container
Optimal Volume: 90 ml is preferred; 5 ml is min
Collection Guidelines: Keep the specimen cup tightly closed to prevent leakage. Specimens may be stored unrefrigerated for up to 7 days following collection.
After 7 days, specimens must be stored frozen at -20˚C or colder.
DCLS approved submitters can request collection kits at DCLS_SSSKits@dgs.virginia.gov, if a DCLS test kit is available.
Storage Container: Sterile Leak-Proof Container -20˚C freezer

Causes For Rejection:
- Quantity not sufficient for testing
- Specimen received out of the appropriate temperature range.
