Test Description: Identification, confirmation and further characterization of Enteric pathogens for epidemiologic purposes. These pathogens include Shiga-toxin producing Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio, Yersinia

Specimen Type: Bacterial isolate on plate media or Cary Blair gel-swab

Collection Container: Cary Blair gel-swab or other media appropriate for Campylobacter growth

Optimal Volume: Not Applicable

Storage Container: Not Applicable

Storage Instructions: Plate media store at room temperature; Cary Blair gel-swab store at 2-8°C

Transportation Instructions: Room Temperature

Test Methodology: Conventional culture methods and molecular methods.

Causes For Rejection:

  • Samples with no name or identifier, mismatched samples and test request forms.
  • Media that has expired prior to inoculation.
  • Incorrect or broken transport media.
  • Evidence of exposure to temperature extremes during transport.

Possible Results: Full isolate identification. Isolate may be forwarded to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for further testing if necessary.
