Laboratory: Newborn Screening
Test Description: The Virginia Newborn Screening Panel screens each baby born in the Commonwealth of Virginia for 33 genetic and metabolic disorders.

Specimen Type: Dried Bloodspot
Collection Container: Virginia Newborn Screening device with attached PE226 filter paper
Optimal Volume: Five (5) filled circles of blood, one drop per circle
Collection Guidelines:
- Hospitals, midwives, and physician offices may request collection devices by emailing DCLS_SSSKits@dgs.virginia.gov
Storage Instructions: After drying, collection device should be stored at 15-30°C from collection until shipment.
Transportation Instructions: For shipping carrier questions, please email DCLS_SSSKits@dgs.virginia.gov.
Test Methodology: Varied; including automated immunoassays, mass spectrometry, digital microfluidics, chromatography, and molecular testing.
Additional Information: Following testing, reports are made available to the submitter and provider listed on the collection card.
Causes for Rejection:
- Incorrect specimen type
- Improper collection
- Scratched or abraded cards
- Received wet
- Oversaturated
- Contamination
- Expired filter paper card
- Insufficient quantity of blood
- Specimen collected >6 months of age
- Specimen received at <-20°C or >30°C
