COURTHOUSE EVALUATION PROGRAM
Starting in 2009, localities that wish to assess an additional fee to raise funds to support courthouse construction costs must first obtain a review of their existing courthouse by the Department of General Services (DGS). This review is to determine whether the existing courthouse complies with the current safety and security standards in the Virginia Courthouse Facility Guidelines. If DGS certifies the existing courthouse as non-compliant, and the facility cannot be feasibly renovated to correct such non-compliance, the locality's governing body may assess an additional fee of $3 per case.
Request an Evaluation
Once a county Board of Supervisors or city council determines that an evaluation of the local courthouse is desired (in accord with §17.1-281), the locality must:
- Complete the Application and Facility Evaluation Forms
- Note: The Virginia Courthouse Facilities Guidelines, 2015 Edition, as published by the Office of the Executive Secretary, Supreme Court of Virginia, is the basis for the Facility Evaluation form. These guidelines provide details of the evaluation criteria and should be used as resource to complete the evaluation.
- Submit the completed application and evaluation forms, including a site plan or map as applicable. Provide other supporting documentation, if available, including facility condition reports, facility safety or security evaluations, special safety or security operating procedures, or any other information pertinent to the evaluation. Submit complete packages:
