Looking to show off your cornhole skills?

Come join us for the first-ever Governor's Cornhole Tournament.

Regionals: October 5 at community colleges across Virginia
Championship: October 19 at Capitol Square, Richmond
Registration deadline: September 13

OnTheSquareVA is hosting its first statewide state employee cornhole tournament. This OnTheSquare – Anywhere event will begin with regional competitions at community colleges throughout Virginia on October 5. The winning team from each regional tournament will be expected to travel to Capitol Square on October 19 to compete for the championship of the first Governor's Cornhole Tournament.

Each team will consist of two players and an alternate in case one of the original team members cannot compete in the next round. All players must be state employees. Brackets will be announced ahead of the competition, and all games are first-to-21, single-elimination matches. An OnTheSquareVA volunteer will help administer each regional competition and the state championship.

There is no entry fee; however, employees who win at the regional level are responsible for their travel to Richmond. Registration is required by September 13. We are excited to see who will take the title as Governor's Cornhole Tournament Champions!

Regional Tournaments

Regional competitions are scheduled at the following locations at 10 a.m. on October 5, 2019.

Brackets are linked. If there is no bracket linked, only one team registered in that region, and they will receive a bye to the state championships.

Once you register, you will receive additional information, including the exact location of the competition. OnTheSquareVA reserves the right to cancel any regional competition if we do not receive enough teams who register. If that happens, we will contact you to choose a different regional location, if desired.

The length of the regional matches will be determined by how many teams register for each location. Once registration closes on September 13, OnTheSquareVA will draw teams to determine bracket seeding for each regional competition. Those brackets will be available on this website and will be emailed to participants.

State Championship

The state championship will be held at 2 p.m. on October 19, 2019 on Capitol Square in Richmond. The brackets for the state championship will be drawn after the regional competition. They will be posted on this website and emailed to each participant.

Cornhole Rules

Cornhole boards shall be positioned 27 feet from the front edge of each board. The front edge of the board is the foul line.

Traditional 21: The game shall be played to the predetermined number of twenty-one (21) points. The first team to reach (or exceed) that amount at the conclusion of a frame is the winner.

Woody: Refers to any cornhole bag that has been pitched and remains on the cornhole board playing surface at the conclusion of the frame. Each woody is one (1) point.

Cornhole: Refers to any cornhole bag that has been pitched and passes through the cornhole board hole at any time within the frame. Each cornhole is 3 points.

Each team is responsible for recording and reporting their scores to the tournament administrator.

A bag that comes to rest touching the ground AND the board does not count as a point.

Cancellation scoring: In cancellation scoring, the points of one player cancel out the points of their opponent. Using this method, only one team can score in each frame.

Designated Foul Bags

Any bag that contacted the court or the ground before coming to rest on the playing surface.

Any bag that comes to rest touching the ground and the board.

Any bag that struck a previously defined object such as a tree limb, wire, indoor court ceiling, etc.

Doubles Play

Team A competes against Team B – each team is comprised of two (2) people.

Each team will stay in their designated lane for the whole game.

Players at the headboard will alternate pitching bags until each player has pitched all (4) of his/her bags.

Players at the footboard will take score and resume pitching back to the other cornhole board.

Players start the game at board 1 and alternate pitching bags until each player has pitched all (4) of his/her bags.

Players must deliver the bag with an underhand release. Feet must stay behind the foul line of the front of the board at the time of releasing the bag.

The team who scored in the preceding frame pitches first in the next frame. If neither team scores, the team who pitched first in the preceding frame shall retain first pitch in the next frame.

If bags become piled inside the cornhole board hole and may interfere or obstruct with the next pitch or if there is question whether a cornhole bag would have naturally fallen through the hole, a player may request to "rake" the cornhole bags that have fallen inside the hole
